Belgian member organisation GAIA held a press conference today where it uncovered extremely shocking images from an investigation into the trade on horse meat from North and South America, from breeding to slaughter. It points to the fact that no attention is paid to the animals' welfare at all and practices are used which are outlawed in the EU and yet this meat ends up on our supermarket shelves.

Today, the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee voted on the draft report concerning the future EU Regulation on animal health (COM(2013)260). Led by Rapporteur Marit Paulsen, the vote sees the adoption of a report which includes a number of changes to the Commission’s proposal.

Eurogroup for Animals calls upon the International Trade Committee to consider and support animal welfare when it meets on 12 February next week to agree its Resolution on the EU-Vietnam trade agreement.

On Tuesday 11 February, the European Parliament’s Agriculture Committee will vote on the draft report concerning the future EU Regulation on animal health (COM(2013)260). This vote is of crucial importance as it has the potential to ensure that the proposed law will address animal diseases in a more holistic way. In the wake of numerous disease outbreaks that have severely impacted the health and welfare of millions of animals, Eurogroup for Animals calls on the members of the Agriculture Committee to vote in favour of amendments that will ensure that all animal health concerns will be addressed.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes efforts made by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee to strengthen animal welfare provisions in the Rapporteur Pavel Poc’s Report on the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. Unfortunately, several “get out clauses” in the form of derogations for Member States and commercial interests have also been adopted which could render the regulation totally ineffective.
