Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the adoption by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) of a much anticipated alternative method which is expected to reduce the number of animals required per test from 2600 to 1400.

Eurogroup welcomes the news that during the last meeting of the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health (SCoFCAH), Member States unanimously voted in favour of the financing decision on alternatives to surgical castration of pigs.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the vote yesterday by the Dutch Parliament which makes stunning prior to slaughter, including for religious slaughter obligatory in the Netherlands. This is a step forward for animal welfare as it ends the exemption for religious slaughter where animals are killed fully conscious without stunning on religious grounds and this will alleviate the suffering of up to one million animals in The Netherlands.

Eurogroup for Animals has today launched a campaign, Clone-Free-Food, and a Declaration to gather support to end as soon as possible the use of cloning for food production in Europe. The campaign encourages European citizens, politicians and companies, especially food producers and retailers, to show their opposition to cloning by signing the Declaration. During Eurogroup for Animals Annual General Meeting today, Kartika Liotard MEP, rapporteur of the recent Novel Foods directive review became the first signatory to the declaration and encouraged as many people as possible to share her concerns.
