Despite efforts done Sweden has not yet brought its policy for the protection of endangered wolves into line with EU rules on nature protection. On the recommendation of Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik, the European Commission has therefore decided to send a reasoned opinion requesting Sweden to amend its wolf policy. Sweden has two months to comply. If it fails to do so, the Commission may refer the case to the EU Court of Justice.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the European Parliament's threat to block the ratification of the Canada-EU Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement if the Canadian government did not withdraw its challenge to the EU ban on seal products at the World Trade Organisation.

In view of the plenary vote on EU-Canada Trade Resolution scheduled tomorrow at the European Parliament, Humane Society International (HSI), International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) together with Eurogroup for Animals issued a briefing in which we strongly urge Members of the European Parliament to support amendment 10 on seal product trade ban.
