Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the new Environment Action Programme as it focuses on better enforcement of existing environment legislation, recognises the need to improve policy cohesion and the use green public procurement, and includes thematic objectives on protection of natural capital, resource efficiency and protection of citizens’ health. However, Eurogroup is disappointed that the European Commission has failed to take this opportunity to fully integrate animal welfare into environment policy.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the award of "Animal Friend of the Year" made today by its member organisation Dyrenes Beskyttelse to Dan Jørgensen MEP. As the president of the intergroup for the welfare of animals Dan Jørgensen has used his position to draw attention to animal welfare failings in the EU and he has been a leading figure in the fight for reducing the transport time for live animals to slaughter.

Following the recent hearing at the European Parliament where Tonio Borg, the Maltese Commissioner–designate for Health and Consumers was quizzed by Members of the European Parliament Eurogroup welcomes the fact that on animal welfare issues the overriding impression given by the proposed new Commissioner is more supportive than his predecessor.

Belgian Member Organisation GAIA announced that Carrefour Belgium, a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest retailers, will move towards more animal welfare friendly requirements with its contractors. This initiative should benefit millions of animals each year and Eurogroup really encourages other food retailers across Europe to demonstrate real concern for the welfare of animals.
