Eurogroup for Animals today launched its campaign to put animal welfare at the heart of the European Elections and make animal welfare an issue that gets citizens to vote and make a difference. In the year of the citizens the distance between the EU institutions and European citizens seems larger than ever. We need to engage the members of the next European Parliament, as the only directly elected EU institution, to bridge the gap between a world of paper and the interests of citizens and animals, of flesh and blood.

Eurogroup is pleased to be actively involved in the European Commission’s first conference on the welfare of cats and dogs that takes place in Brussels today. This conference provides an opportunity for all interested stakeholders - government authorities, NGOs and those with a professional or personal interest - to discuss the situation regarding the breeding and trade in cats and dogs in the EU and to encourage the European Commission to take action.

Eurogroup for Animals is extremely pleased that the Trade Sustainability Impact Assessment, ordered by the European Commission, has made significant changes in the recommendations proposed for free-trade agreement between the EU and Morocco.

Invasive alien species regulation is welcome, but to be effective the Commission’s proposals must be strengthened by removing the 50 species cap, and developing a system that effectively tackles the impacts of invasive species through coordinated, humane, preventative action across the EU.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the inclusion of animal welfare references, in the context of implementation of the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement. This is the result of the participation of Eurogroup for Animals to the 2nd EU-Korea FTA Civil Society Forum.
