Commissioner Borg must start improving the welfare of animals now!

Members of the European Parliament have confirmed at today’s plenary session in Strasbourg the nomination of Tonio Borg as new Maltese Commissioner for Health and Consumers.
Following the more supportive impression Mr Borg has given on animal welfare issues than his predecessor, Eurogroup for Animals hopes that he will stick to his commitments and act quickly to ensure that all outstanding legislation pays full regard to the welfare requirements of animals.
It includes bringing forward a strong proposal for a new European Animal Health Law in the first quarter of 2013, a clear proposal on the cloning of animals used for food supply by June 2013, and maintain the full ban on the marketing of cosmetics containing ingredients tested on animals to come into force in March 2013.

When is something positive going to be done to ensure that countries included in the EEC (or applying for membership) are adhering to the EU regulations relative to animals ? We hear, almost daily, horrific stories about mistreatment and death of animals (often strays) in EU countries ! If even the local authorities in these countries are perpetrating these atrocities, what is being done about it?
