EU ban on seal products driven by EU citizens’ values
Posted on 16/04/2013
Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the work undertaken by the European Commission in defending the EU ban on the sale of seal products, which relays EU citizen’s concerns on animal welfare, especially the document it prepared and presented for a second submission on 24 March 2013.
The document demonstrates the coherency of Regulation (EC) N°1007/2009 of the European & the Council on trade in seal products, given the difficulty experienced in monitoring the lack of suffering for each seal killed by the Canadian’s and Norway’s commercial hunt. This document is now available on the internet
Following the resumption in September 2012, by Canada and Norway of the World Trade Organisation‘s (WTO) dispute on Seals it is expected that the WTO panel in charge of the case will present its report to the Dispute Settlement Body of the WTO in September or October 2013. We hope that measures prohibiting the import and marketing of seal products will be defintively recognised by the WTO.
