Eurogroup joins advisory group for EU-Korea FTA
Posted on 18/04/2012
As decided by EU and Korea, Domestic Advisory Groups will monitor the implementation of the chapter on sustainable development included in the bilateral Trade Agreement. Today, Eurogroup for Animals is pleased and proud to announce it has been confirmed by the European Commission as a member of a Domestic Advisory Group. This decision offers a unique opportunity for animal welfare organisations to advise the Committee in charge of sustainable development.
Applied since 1 July 2011, the EU-Korea FTA is considered pioneering as it includes a chapter on sustainable development, which is monitored by the civil society through advisory groups set up on both sides and specifically established for this purpose. The European advisory group will consist of 12 members (4 representatives of trade unions, 4 representatives of business and 4 representatives of the civil society) and will be coordinated by the European Economic and Social Committee.
As the only NGO representing animal welfare interests, Eurogroup for Animals will sit on this Domestic Advisory Group together with representatives of development and human rights organisations. This opportunity is unique, as it allows Eurogroup and its network to draw attention to issues related to animal welfare and share its expertise in that area.
