“There is no such thing as animal welfare, there’s only welfare and I think we can’t have too much of it.” This was the opening statement Eurogroup’s Director Reineke Hameleers gave in front of MEPs at the European Parliament’s Intergroup on the welfare and conservation of animals last week in Strasbourg.
This meeting provided her an opportunity to introduce herself as the new director of Eurogroup, stressing that the European project is not only of great importance to the people living in Europe but that it also plays a crucial role in the way our relationship with billions of animals will develop in the coming years and beyond. Since the human race and other non-human species are inextricably related, animal welfare can only exist in connection with general welfare and vice versa.
Reineke also presented the priorities for Eurogroup’s forthcoming Election Campaign which will be launched in September with all our members societies and will tackle important topics such as farming, trade, companion animals, wildlife and animal testing. Together with all its members, Eurogroup will request every potential Member of the European Parliament to make a real pledge for animal welfare for the coming years. Members of the Intergroup responded positively to the presentation and stressed that Eurogroup and its members should “strike while the iron is hot”.
