European Parliament adopts resolution on endocrine disrupters

Eurogroup for Animals is pleased that MEPs showed their support for animal welfare during the vote on endocrine disruptors at the European Parliament’s plenary session.

Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that affect human and animal hormones. The EU strategy is ten years old and needs to be reviewed to incorporate the latest scientific information and possibly tighten controls and strengthen the authorisation and use of such substances. The report calls for the protection of public health from endocrine disrupters.

The vote sends a clear message that the promotion of alternative, non-animal test methods during safety testing of endocrine disrupting chemicals should be emphasised in the revised strategy, and animal tests should only be used as a last resort. MEPs also supported the work of the European Union’s Reference Laboratory for Alternatives to Animal Testing (EURL ECVAM) and highlighted the importance of taking the necessary steps to protect wildlife from endocrine disrupting chemicals.
