European Parliament calls on Commission to ensure better animal welfare
Posted on 04/07/2012
MEPs today have sent a strong signal to the European Commission that Europeans want better animal welfare and it must act immediately to ensure that the protection of animals remains high on the EU agenda.
The report by Marit Paulsen MEP on the new European Union Strategy for the Protection and Welfare of Animals 2012-2015 has indeed been adopted by a large majority at the European Parliament with 574 voting in favour.
The resolution, which follows the structure outlined in the Commission’s document, gives considerably more emphasis to many aspects that were vaguely or not taken into account in the Commission communication and recalls that Article 13 of the Lisbon Treaty is of general application and as such equally as important as the environment or consumer protection and legally preeminent to all internal market policies.

Nowadays we are able to recognize what we are doing wrong to animals. We are not living in the Middle Age and we are not too poor to stand up for animal rights. I mean not only pets, I mean also stock (animals). Better rules or investigation cameras installed in slaughterhouses. Better conditions for animals during transports. Animals were bred to eat them, but it is not necessary to humble or take their dignity. No longer any cruelty against animals - no longer any pain for our fellow creatures! It´s shameful for the human race!
