Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the initiative of the European Commission to hold its first ever equine expert meeting in Brussels on 7 May 2014. The meeting will gather experts from across European Member States to explore the state of play on equine welfare across Europe and the role of regulation.

Eurogroup for Animals hopes that the vote on 17 April 2014 in the Plenary in Strasbourg on the Resolution on the state of play of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement will endorse the resolution drafted by Jan Zahradil MEP and ensure that animal welfare standards are included in the agreement.

Yesterday, the European Parliament voted in favour of making multiple improvements to the future EU Regulation on animal health (COM(2013)260) by voting in favour of the overwhelming majority of amendments that had been adopted in the Parliament's Agriculture Committee report. Led by Marit Paulsen, Rapporteur of the Agriculture Committee for this dossier, the agreed amendments should ensure a more focused and holistic approach to the prevention and control of animal diseases which are transmissible among animals or to humans.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the European Parliament's endorsement of a compromise proposal for a Regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species voted on at Plenary today. Improvements to the Commission's proposal included additional references to animal welfare such as consideration of non-lethal methods and impacts on non-target species.

On Tuesday 15 April, the European Parliament will vote on the Report of the Agriculture Committee on the Proposal for a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Animal Health (COM(2013)0260). Eurogroup for Animals calls on the Members of the Parliament to ensure that the animal welfare improvements adopted in the Agriculture Committee’s report concerning improved prevention of transmissible animal diseases are maintained.

This week the European Commission published the long awaited proposal for a new Regulation on organic farming and production, which would replace Council Regulation (EC) No 834/2007 following a period of transition. The proposal aims to improve the existing legislation on organic production to better support its sustainable development in the Union, guarantee fair competition for farmers and operators, and maintain consumer confidence in organic products.
