Today the European Commission published its ninth Report on the development, validation, and legal acceptance of alternative methods to animal testing in the field of cosmetics. This report provides detailed information on the development of alternative test methods and shows the number of animals used in cosmetics testing. The data shows that in 2009 in France and Spain alone a total of 344 animals where used compared to 1510 in 2008. The Commission will use the report to decide to maintain the ban to end all tests in 2013 or to extend the deadline.

Following a press article concluding that 75% of animals slaughtered within the EU are not stunned prior to slaughter, Eurogroup for Animals requested immediate response from the European Commission, as it seems the amount of meat coming from animals slaughtered in this way is much higher than the amount required to meet the needs of the religious communities in the EU.
