Illegal wildlife trade to be adressed in EU-Morocco trade talks

Eurogroup for Animals is extremely pleased that the Trade Sustainability Impact Assessment, ordered by the European Commission, has made significant changes in the recommendations proposed for free-trade agreement between the EU and Morocco.
At a meeting today DG Trade presented a "Draft Final Report" which following intensive input from Eurogroup and its members, particularly Stichting AAP, now includes our policy recommendations for the environment pillar to ensure an affective implementation and enforcement of CITES.
If taken into consideration in the current Trade negotiations, the recommendation could positively curb the illegal trade of endangered species such as the Barbary macaque. This report will now be finalised and published in November and we hope that the version presented today will not change and that these major animal welfare provisions will remain.
