Eurogroup members Compassion in World Farming, RSPCA and the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), in partnership with the Soil Association are working across the EU to demand honest food labelling that would tell consumers at a glance whether their food has come from a humane system or a factory farm.

The long awaited proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on Animal Health was published this week, on 6 May 2013. The proposal is aimed at reducing the complexity of the current legislation on animal health, by streamlining roughly 400 legal acts of relevance into a single law.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the recent decision made by the Board of Appeal of the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) to annul an animal study and stated that the Agency had breached the REACH Regulation requiring testing on vertebrate animals only to be undertaken as a last resort, and the requirement to ensure that the minimum number of animals would be used if testing on vertebrate animals is required. This decision comes as a result of actions undertaken by interested stakeholders during the statutory REACH consultation period to prove the test was unnecessary.

Eurogroup is pleased that Greece and Italy have been referred to the Court of Justice of the European Union by the European Commission over the failure to correctly implement Directive 1999/74/EC banning unenriched battery cages.
