Laissez-faire markets do not promote animal welfare
Posted on 29/02/2012
On the occasion of the conference on animal welfare “Implementing animal welfare through the new EU Strategy; consumer power and market opportunities” organised by the Danish Presidency of the European Union, Eurogroup for Animals released a briefing paper calling on the EU not to substitute legislation with a laissez-faire approach, letting the market take the lead.
In its paper, Eurogroup calls on the Danish presidency to develop Council Conclusions that urge the Commission to include in its upcoming framework law a list of demands to ensure that all animals benefit from minimum welfare levels. Allowing the market to operate without minimum standards coupled with ill-informed consumers is a recipe for disaster and will result in green washing, consumer fraud and continued animal suffering.
