Members of Eurogroup unanimous in their support of EU Regulation on trade in seal products
Posted on 20/06/2013
At its recent Annual Meeting Eurogroup for Animals members unanimously voted in favour of a resolution supporting the EU ban on seal products which entered into force on 20 November 2009 (Regulation (EC) 1007/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Trade in Seal products).
This follows recent complaints by Canada and Norway to the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The WTO formed a panel in October 2012 to consider whether the EU legislation on trade in seal products in consistent with the EU’s obligations under WTO rules and it is expected that the panel will issue a final report in October 2013, before adopting it in December 2013.
Eurogroup for Animals and its members, which are mobilised against the commercial hunting of seals, especially the largest hunt which takes place in Canada each spring urge the European Commission to defend its legislation and continue to implement its ban on seal products.
