Eurogroup for Animals has today launched a Memorandum outlining its position on animal welfare related policies that will be discussed as part of the Greek Presidency of the Council of the European Union and it will be formally presented to the Presidency on Thursday 30 January 2014.

Eurogroup for Animals is pleased that the majority of animal welfare related amendments were adopted by the European Parliament’s Environment Committee when it voted on Kartika Liotard’s draft opinion on the proposed EU Animal Health law.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the mention of farm animal and wild animal welfare in the draft Resolution discussed today at the International Trade Committee of the European Parliament. This has been made possible thanks to the actions of Eurogroup for Animals in raising awareness on the need for cooperation between the EU and Vietnam on the welfare of farm animals and wildlife.

From 21 to 23 January 2014, the European Fur Information Centre (a pro-fur trade body) will hold an exhibition at the European Parliament to promote the fur industry. In a recent Parliament Magazine advertisement promoting this event, they have invited everyone, including the ‘nay-sayers’, to join them in their discussion of ‘animal welfare, ethics, sustainability, socioeconomics and the future of fur’.

On Wednesday 22 January, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee will vote on the draft opinion concerning the future EU Regulation on animal health. The vote presents an opportunity for Members of the European Parliament to help ensure that the proposed law will address animal diseases in a more holistic way.
