Clear evidence shows that animals transported from the EU to Turkey are subjected to horrific conditions at the border between Bulgaria and Turkey. Despite this fact, the welfare of these animals is continuously ignored by the competent authorities and Eurogroup urges the European Commission to take the necessary steps to suspend this inhumane trade immediately.

Eurogroup welcomes the letters of formal notice the European Commission has sent today to 13 Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Romania) requesting for information to take action to address deficiencies in the implementation of European Directive 1999/74/EC which bans the use of barren battery cages for all laying hens in the European Union since 1 January 2012. The list of countries should also include Malta but it is not mentioned in the Commission statement.

The European Parliament has adopted in plenary last week, legislation to implement stricter safety checks on biocides, products ranging from rat poisons to disinfectants. The new provisions reduce animal testing by making data sharing compulsory and encouraging a more flexible and intelligent approach to testing.

Eurogroup for Animals is extremely disappointed by the EU’s new Animal welfare strategy published today which outlines the future actions proposed to improve the treatment and welfare of animals until 2015. This strategy lacks any ambition and is a missed opportunity to highlight the role the EU can play in translating citizens concerns into action. Research clearly shows that European citizens care deeply about animals and expect governments to take responsibility and improve animal welfare. This strategy completely ignores this and the positive impact good animal welfare has on animal health, food safety and quality and sustainability.

Today sees the official publication of the “Guidelines to assess fitness for transport of adult bovines”. These voluntary guidelines are designed to provide easy to understand help and advice to professionals involved in the transport of adult cattle - such as farmers, traders, hauliers and control authorities. They aim to improve animal protection during the transport process. The voluntary guidelines use pictures and easy to understand texts in order to facilitate decisions on the suitability of adult cattle for transport. They are based on and complementary to the relevant European legislation, but do not take account of national rules applicable in individual Member States.
