Just a few weeks after a disappointing report which evaluated the implementation of controls for animal welfare on farms and during transport in Italy, a more recent audit carried out by the European Commission’s Food and Veterinary Office in Italy shows again poor follow-up actions taken by the Competent Authorities this time with regard to animal welfare controls at border inspection posts.

The European Food Safety Authority, the EU risk assessment body for food and feed safety, published an interesting recommendation based on the latest scientific evidence on exposing the major welfare problems of cattle kept for beef production and the welfare in intensive calf farming systems.

Eurogroup welcomes the note presented by the Swedish delegation to the Council of the European Union on the enforcement of the general requirement to stun animals before slaughter. The issue was raised during this week’s Agriculture and Fisheries Council Meeting in Brussels.

Eurogroup for Animals called on the European Commission to ban the cloning animals for food production during a Working Group organised by DG Consumer to help prepare its impact assessment on Cloning which also follows the opening of a public consultation on the subject.

The European Parliament’s Environment Committee has adopted today the draft opinion by Kartika Liotard MEP on the protection of animals during transport.

On 3 May, the European Commission launched a public consultation on the cloning of animals for food production. The consultation will run until 3 September and will feed into a Commission impact assessment prior to publishing their proposal on cloning expected early 2013.
