The European Commission is currently collecting data from EU Member States on their level of compliance with Directive (EC) 2001/88 for the protection of pigs, which among other requirements introduces a ban on the use of individual stalls for pregnant sows and gilts as of 1 January 2013.

A new independent scientific report, released today, has resulted in calls for an EU-wide ban on exotic pet markets to protect animal welfare, public health and biodiversity. The report, commissioned by the Animal Protection Agency, International Animal Rescue, Eurogroup for Animals and other European animal protection groups, was this week presented to Caroline Lucas MP and Keith Taylor MEP.

Eurogroup welcomes today’s adoption of the draft report on the EU biodiversity strategy to 2020 by the European Parliament in Strasbourg. The report, drafted by Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy MEP, calls for biodiversity to be considered and integrated in all other EU policy fields including the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) which are currently being reviewed. This vote sends a strong message on the interconnectivity of fisheries, land use, health, welfare and trade policy and the need for a holistic approach to biodiversity conservation.

As decided by EU and Korea, Domestic Advisory Groups will monitor the implementation of the chapter on sustainable development included in the bilateral Trade Agreement. Today, Eurogroup for Animals is pleased and proud to announce it has been confirmed by the European Commission as a member of a Domestic Advisory Group. This decision offers a unique opportunity for animal welfare organisations to advise the Committee in charge of sustainable development.
