Expectations for a Future Sustainable EU Agriculture Policy
This paper looks at the current status of farm animal welfare as a consequence of EU agricultural policies and shows the place of animal welfare in connection with sustainable agriculture. It further studies the role the EU agriculture policy can play to improve farm animal welfare through payments to farmers, making concrete recommendations to the European Commission in view of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform that starts in 2010.
This paper does not present fully detailed proposals for the new EU agriculture policy. It proposes a number of principles which we believe should be enshrined in the overhauled CAP.
