The EU-Chile Free Trade Agreement: a Boost for Animal Welfare

The inclusion of animal welfare in the bilateral trade agreement has clearly led to the institutionalisation of animal welfare. In this paper, we describe the contribution of the Chile-EU bilateral Free Trade Agreement in the promotion of animal welfare in Chile. We also look at trade liberalisation in Chile, animal welfare in bilateral relations, and the emergence of a regulatory system, before evaluating the impact of this process on Chile.

Dogs and Cats in the European Union

It is estimated that there are around 60 million owned dogs and 64 million owned cats in the European Union, but there is currently very little EU legislation to protect their welfare. Whilst many dogs and cats in the EU are loved and cared for as members of the family, the way in which they are treated can vary greatly across Europe.

Eurogroup for Animals welcomes the fact that the Commission wishes to formulate the second Action plan and a strategy on the basis of an evaluation. Expectations for a Future Sustainable EU Agriculture Policy

This paper looks at the current status of farm animal welfare as a consequence of EU agricultural policies and shows the place of animal welfare in connection with sustainable agriculture. It further studies the role the EU agriculture policy can play to improve farm animal welfare through payments to farmers, making concrete recommendations to the European Commission in view of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform that starts in 2010.

This paper does not present fully detailed proposals for the new EU agriculture policy. It proposes a number of principles which we believe should be enshrined in the overhauled CAP.
