Companion Animals

Millions of dogs, cats, birds and other animals in the EU are kept for companionship, sport or entertainment. While many are loved and cared for as members of the family, a great number end up being abandoned or mistreated. Breeding and selling pets is an important business where the welfare of the animals is sacrificed for commercial gain.

While each EU member state has its own domestic animal welfare legislation, standards vary greatly and Eurogroup is strongly urging the European Commission to adopt adequate measures to ensure that all pet animals are properly treated to protect their health and welfare.
