ABOUT THE ISSUE
The Transatlantic Animal Welfare Council (TAWC) was officially launched on Thursday 29 April 2010 in Washington D.C., USA. It is set up to establish a forum to strengthen the relationship between US and EU animal welfare groups with the aim to improve the exchange of information and cooperation.
Its specific aims are:
- To create a better understanding about different approaches relating to animal welfare and ways of addressing societal concerns in both continents. This covers the views on what animal welfare means, the political and regulatory environment and attitudes.
- Monitor trade relations between EU and US and in particular monitor and react to the activities of the EU/US Transatlantic Economic Council
- To facilitate the development of common EU/US statements on animal welfare by NGOs or authorities where required
- Provide updates for colleagues on issues of joint interest
